Computer Technology


Keyboarding / 5 units

In this class students learn proper keyboarding technique and develop speed and accuracy in their data entry. Basic word-processing techniques such as formatting, printing, and file management are also covered. (Required for graduation. This class may be waived upon demonstration of the required proficiency.)


Computer Literacy / 5 units

This beginning-level computer class emphasizes the importance of computer literacy. Students learn basic database and spreadsheet applications and how they are used in everyday life. This class is a prerequisite to all other computer classes offered at Rio. (Required for graduation. This class may be waived upon demonstration of the required proficiency.)


Graphics with Photoshop / 5 units

This course presents the basic and intermediate operating principles of Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn the beginning and intermediate skills of the Photoshop program, such as using the toolbox, painting & editing, selection fundamentals & working with type. Topics include working with scanned images, masking, filters, applying strokes & fills. This course helps prepare students to pass the Adobe Certified Expert Photoshop 7.0 certification exam.


Web Site Design / 5 units

This class focuses on using web authoring tools to create and manage Internet or Intranet sites. Students will use web authoring tools to plan, design and publish Web sites on the World Wide Web. Planning and design topics include using a Web editor to create Web site structures, set page/Web site properties, apply text styles, paragraph styles, graphics features, hyperlinks, standard tables and forms.


Publications Technology 10 units

Students will learn both desktop publishing, with Adobe InDesign, and digital imaging, with Adobe Photoshop, in a very practical way as they participate in producing Rio's completely digital yearbook. The class will also teach journalistic feature writing and cover a wide variety of page design techniques.


Microsoft PowerPoint / 5 units

The purpose of this class is to teach the basic and advanced operating principles of Microsoft PowerPoint 2002. Students will create outlines, charts and tables; use data from other sources; add multimedia elements and work with templates. Students will also link slides; customize, prepare and deliver presentations, and use the workgroup collaboration features of Microsoft office. Students will acquaint themselves with the proper procedures to create presentations suitable for coursework, professional purposes, and personal use. This course helps prepare students to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) PowerPoint 2002 Comprehensive certification exam.


Microsoft Word / 5 Units

This course presents the basic and intermediate concepts of Microsoft Word Version 2002. Students will view and save documents, use bulleting and highlighting tools, set page margins, and indent paragraphs. Students will use pictures and drawings within a Word document. They will also use columns, tables, and Excel data within Word documents. This course helps prepare the students to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Word Core certification exam.
