English


English I / 10 units

English I is a broad-based language arts experience. Students learn grammar, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills in a variety of ways. Students receive suggestions for improvement from both the teacher and their peers. Small group conferencing equips students with interpersonal skills and step-bystep methods for success. The goal of the instructor is that each student will experience improvement and his/her varied communication skills.

English II / 10 units

English II students are guided through a comprehensive language arts experience that prepares them for competent composition writing and public speaking. Critical thinking skills are developed through analysis of classic literature.

English III / 10 units

English III is a general requirement English class. First semester is a survey of American literature in which students read and evaluate selected works by major American authors. Second semester includes a comprehensive grammar and usage review along with an introduction to public speaking.

Honors English III / 10 units

Honors English III is an intensive yearlong survey of American Literature class. Activities and study are coordinated with Honors U.S. History, allowing students to see the relationship between the ideas presented by major American authors and the corresponding events taking place in American history. The class requires extensive reading, writing and analysis. Prerequisite: see instructor for details.

English IV / 10 units

English IV is a general requirement English class. First semester helps prepare students to enter freshmen composition in college with an emphasis on expository writing and vocabulary development, concluding with the writing of a fully documented research paper in MLA style. Second semester emphasizes literary analysis and writing about literature as students study a variety of literary works.

Honors English IV / 10 units

Honors English IV is a humanities course focusing on the history of ideas that have impacted Western civilization as represented in literature and art. The course is divided into the following nine units: Biblical Literature, Classical Greece and Rome, The Dark and Middle Ages, The Renaissance/Reformation Periods, The Baroque Period, The Neoclassical Period, The Romantic Period, The Realism Period, and The Modern Period. This class requires extensive reading and analysis. Prerequisite: see instructor for details.

Media Production / 10 units

Media Production class, which applies toward one semester (5 units) of English credit and one semester of Advanced Computer credit, gives an overview of print journalism and video production. For the journalism component, students will learn basic news, editorial, and feature writing; the principles of newspaper layout and design; and copy editing skills. For the video component, students will learn to script, film, and edit a variety of video productions. While editing, students will become competent in the use of Final Cut Pro, a professional nonlinear video editing program. Admission to the class is by instructor permission only based on an interview and submission of a class application form.
