Spartans Volleyball Bruce Yingling January 2010 The Lady Spartans volleyball team ended their season with a home loss to Pescadero in the first round of the North Central League regional playoffs. Although the first game was close, 22-25, the Rio girls could not overcome the loss of two starters because of sickness and injury and ended up losing the next two games 19-25 and 12-25.
Although the team was disappointed to lose Rio’s first league home playoff game, they were happy with their winning 14-11 regular season record (7-5 in league). Their third place regular season finish in the league is the best placement of any Rio team since Rio joined league play.
![]() Three Lady Spartans received league recognition for the quality of their play throughout the season. Erielle Apelo and Seraphie Allen made 2nd. team in league. Katie Schmidt was Honorable Mention. Summing up the season, Seraphie Allen stated, “In the volleyball season we bonded together as a team and were proud of being the first Rio team in league play to make it to the playoffs with a home game.”
Building on the success this season next year will be a real challenge because the team will be losing five seniors: Katie Schmidt, Erielle Apelo, Melissa Stockton, Melana Llopis, and Natalie Schlotthauer.
