Computer Technology

In this changing world of technology, students must learn the framework to navigate and function in a digital world. Rio offers basic computing classes as well as advanced design and production classes to enable students not just to learn programs to be able to express themselves through the digital arts.

English

The English department challenges students to read and think deeply about literature, public speaking and writing and builds each year on acquired skills. If you would like to be challenged even further, consider taking Honors English III and Honors English IV which are required for an honors diploma.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Incoming English Language Learners will find Rio’s ESL program comprehensive and exciting. Students are tested upon arrival and placed in the appropriate class. In addition to basic ESL classes, students can take an ESL Reading and an ESL Writing class to practice vocabulary and speaking skills.

Fine Arts

In the Fine Arts classes, you will find a variety of ways to express yourself from Ceramics to Orchestra. The Fine Arts department includes the Music classes, hands-on Art classes, and Drama class. Five credits of Fine Arts are required for a General Diploma, and twenty credits are required for College Prep or Honors Diplomas.

History and Social Science

Students get to not only learn learn about history, but actually get to experience it in the social sciences department. In these classes, students work on projects that bring historical events to life, such as re-enacting a presidential race or visiting the county court to learn about the U.S. justice system.

Mathematics

Rio’s math department teachers work hard to make sure each and every student understands math concepts and are prepared for the next class. Rio has math classes for every skill level and challenges students to use and build on previous skills, while demonstrating how math is applicable to every day life.

Modern Language

Rio has three levels of Spanish for students to learn speaking, writing, and listen skills. Not only will students be immersed in the language during class, but they will also experience the culture of Spanish-speaking cultures around the world through learning songs, holiday events, and recipes.

Life Skills and Industrial Technology

Rio is one of the only schools that still teaches industrial arts such as wood shop, auto shop, and welding, as well as home arts. In these classes, students learn valuable skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.

Physical Education

All students are required to take P.E. classes, and Rio’s P.E. department enables students to understand the world of fitness and athletics. Through these classes, students become aware of how exercise improves overall health, as well as the fundamentals of sports.

Religious Studies

As a Seventh-day Adventist school, Rio offers religion classes for each grade level. In Religion classes students study the Bible, Jesus’ teachings and character, and relationship skills.

Science

Rio offers more than twice the amount of science classes that are required for the top diplomas. Students can take their choice of Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Physical Science. Students meet with an adviser at the beginning of the year to select the best science for each student’s future goals and interests.
